More than one in five foreign-born Houstonians — an estimated 318,284 persons — were born in Asia. Asian nations that are the birthplaces of the largest numbers of Houstonians are Vietnam (80,444), India (60,481), China (36,061), Philippines (26,035), Pakistan (22,929), Korea (12,763) and Iran (8,755).
Residents born in the Western Hemisphere south of the U.S.-Mexico border account for 66.6 percent of the Houston MSA’s foreign-born population. Mexico alone accounts for nearly half of all foreign-born Houston residents (600,727). El Salvador was the birthplace of the next largest of this group (106,298), followed by Honduras (44,197), Guatemala (32,866) and Colombia (17,355).
